The Nintendo Switch is a fantastically sociable gaming system. Splatoon 2, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, and a slew of other co-op exclusives, not to mention all those cross-platform games, make the Switch ideal for when you want to spend time with pals online in this odd world we now live in.

However, if you wish to play with your friends, you must first add them to Nintendo Switch Online. Thankfully, it’s a rather painless procedure – but one with a few oddities.

On Switch, there are a few different methods to add a buddy, depending on where you are in terms of proximity and how you met them.

You’ll always be working from the same system menu, so these are the steps you’ll need to start with, no matter what process you’re utilizing. Also, you can seehow to reset an iPad

To begin, go to the upper left corner of the page and choose your user profile. To enter your page, look for the avatar you chose when you created your profile and press the A button.

Scroll down to ‘Add Friend’ and click it. Here’s when a few alternatives become useful. Let’s go over what you’ll need to accomplish for each situation.

If you’re in the same physical place as your potential pal, just select ‘Search for Local Users’ and wait while your console searches for Switch consoles nearby.

After a few moments, your system will present you with a variety of playing-card-inspired icons, such as hearts, clubs, diamonds, and spades. Simply make sure you and your friend choose the same one, and you’ll be friends in no time. It’s almost like a minigame for establishing friends!

If you were just crushed by a member of the other side in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, you might want to add them as a friend to get some advice on how to improve your fighting skills. Maybe you met someone on Animal Crossing who has the most amazing island, and you want to visit each other? Adding a buddy you meet in-game is a straightforward process regardless of the situation.

Simply choose ‘Search for Users You’ve Played With,’ and you’ll see a list of everyone you’ve lately engaged with online, along with the date you last saw them. When you click on the individual in question, you’ll be given the option to ‘Send Friend Request.’

This is almost certainly the strategy you’ll use the most. If you wish to add a friend who isn’t in the same physical place as you, you’ll need to take note of their ‘friend code,’ which is essentially a long string of digits that starts with “SW.” On the Switch network, that code acts as your unique identify. Every user has at least one.

Select ‘Search with Friend Code,’ key it in, and you’ll have another friend added to your list. Unfortunately, the codes are somewhat extensive, and there isn’t much that can be done about them. However, it’s preferable to mistakenly add a random user due to a misplaced underscore.

You can also keep track of the friend requests you’ve previously given out from the same central menu, in case you’re waiting for a buddy to accept before you can play online with them. In the meanwhile, if you’re a social butterfly, you may also handle the requests you’ve received.

If you want some ideas on who to add, you may link your Switch to your favorite social networking platform and see who you might know. The system will look for friends who have linked their Switch profile to their social media accounts and advise who you should add. It works in a similar way to how many social networking platforms locate relationships, and it may be a great way to meet Switch friends you didn’t realize you had.
