Many individuals were attracted to Discord as the world resorted to video conferencing and instant messaging applications due to the pandemic. Since its inception in 2015, the messaging platform has grown in popularity and continues to do so.
Originally developed as a means for gamers to communicate with teams, friends, and other game lovers, it’s now a full-fledged messaging service available on all major platforms.
While Discord started as a method to organize friendship groups while playing League of Legends or Final Fantasy XIV, it now has a wide range of capabilities that might make it your new social network – or at the very least the digital area where you talk with coworkers during the day.
However, some people may find the app overwhelming, so we’ve put up five recommendations to help you get started with Discord and its various features.
Joining a Server
At its essence, Discord is a community platform. You may send direct messages to friends, but Discord is primarily a server-based application.
Servers are invite-only, and once you’re in, you’ll be able to communicate via text, video, and voice. Users can compose text messages using Markdown, a programming language invented by John Gruber. This text language was created to make document marking up (adding formatting features) considerably easier. In addition to using standard formatting techniques, you may flag text as spoilers.
You can view all of the members of your server on the right-hand side of the screen and see what they’re up to.
But what if you don’t have somebody with whom to establish a server? No issue — public servers are an excellent place to discuss the newest game release, your favorite band, and a variety of other topics.
Some servers have positions, thus appointed admins or other community members with particular duties will be marked.
Video calling or streaming with friends
Aside from text channels, many servers also provide voice channels, as well as the ability to exchange videos while in such channels.
That means users may join game-based channels to meet up with friends or join group calls. Many servers include a more relaxed chat channel specifically for making friends.
You can also broadcast anything you’re doing, which makes Discord an excellent location to watch movies with friends or show off your greatest moves in a game.
Simply choose one of the channels on the left-hand side of the server screen to connect to a voice channel.
When you’re on a call, use the call screen buttons to turn on your camera, share your screen, mute yourself, or disconnect.
We also recommend familiarizing yourself with the buttons on the bottom left of your profile image and Discord ID. The microphone symbol will silence you immediately, while the headphones icon will “deafen” you, so you won’t hear your friends discussing spoilers. Finally, the “cog” is where you’ll find all of your app and account settings.
Connecting apps to Discord
Discord has been around for a few years and has been an important component of online life throughout that time. As a result, a wide range of applications and accounts may connect to Discord.
That means you can post your Spotify playlists, what game you’re playing, and what you’re doing on Twitch, all while maintaining your Discord account connected to your Twitter account.
To get started with connections, go to the bottom right of the app and tap the “user settings” cog symbol next to your account details, then tap “Connections” in the sidebar.
PlayStation has also partnered with Discord, although the main benefit so far is that people can see what you’re playing on your PS4 or PS5 console.
Using a Bot

Discord Bots are a feature that differentiates Discord from many other chat applications. As the name implies, they are AI assistants who hang out in chat until they’re required.
Admins can only add bots to Discord, however bots are used from other websites, so be careful about installing anything suspect. However, many are simple to set up, such as the famous MEE6 bot, which can be installed in minutes.
Admins are the only ones who can limit how much data a bot may utilize on the server. Bots can greet newcomers to a server with a nice greeting and assist them in getting set up in the appropriate conversations for their job; there are also comprehensive bots that assist in group formation for Destiny raids and more.
So, whether you’re searching for a means to make a nice first impression on newbies or adding strong capabilities for veterans, Discord bots can help.
Using Discord Nitro
Nitro is a premium membership option for heavy users on Discord, and while it’s not required, it may give your online appearance a little more flair.
Discord Nitro is available for $9.99/£9.99/AU$ 10.99 per month and $99.99/£99.99/AU$ 109.99 per year. The service now includes more emojis, stickers, and video call backdrops, but the most significant improvement is the addition of multiple profiles, allowing you to link your business and personal accounts to the same account.
There’s now the possibility to send messages with up to 4000 characters, higher video quality for broadcasts, and file uploads of up to 100MB. Two free server enhancements are also included.
What are server enhancements? Server owners may raise the level of their platform inside the app to have access to extra features such as new emoji slots, improved audio quality, and personalized role icons.
