Verdict

These fantastic Bose headphones have class-leading noise cancellation and sound fantastic. However, they fall short in terms of battery life and pricing when compared to the Sony WH-1000XM3 headphones. Still, with this amazing pair of over-ear headphones, you can’t go wrong. If you’re looking for the best active noise-cancelling headphones for music and calls, go no further than the Bose Noise Cancelling Headphones 700.

Pros

  • Elegant and attractive design
  • Calls and music have excellent noise cancellation
  • Audio that’s precise and well-balanced
  • Buttons and touch controls that are easy to use

Cons

  • Battery life might be improved
  • Costly

If you’re looking for the best noise-cancelling headphones, then Bose is a brand you know you can trust. That’s large because its hugely popular QuietComfort range has set the standard for noise cancellation technology since the release of the Bose QC25s way back in 2014.

Six years later, despite the popularity of the QuietComfort line, Bose is mixing things up by introducing a completely new wireless noise-cancelling headphones model. The emphasis here is on nice design and “innovative” audio technology: The Bose Noise Cancelling Headphones 700 are a pair of noise-canceling headphones by Bose. Price and Availability of Bose Noise Cancelling Headphones 700

The Bose Noise Cancelling Headphones 700 retail for $399 (£349.95) in the United States. It took a bit longer for them to arrive in Australia, where they cost $599.95.

The new over-ear headphones are around $50 / £20 / AU$99 more costly than their predecessors, the highly praised Bose QuietComfort 35 II headphones, which combined noise-canceling technology with built-in Google Assistant voice assistance.

They’re also more expensive than the Sony WH-1000XM3 Wireless Headphones, which are currently our best noise-cancelling headphones. However, there is currently a slew of Bose 700 discounts to be had, so you won’t have to pay full price.

Bose headphones in the past, such as the QuietComfort 35 II, were attractive, but in a fatherly sense. The 700s, which come in black or silver, are certainly DILF-ware. The robust stainless steel headband cuts through the center of the plastic ear cups. The band’s top and bottom are comprised of a soft-touch plastic that stores a small amount of Bose’s proprietary foam.

The headband is made to distribute weight evenly, resulting in a more comfortable fit. If you need to alter the fit of the headphones, you may do it by sliding the ear cups up or down rather than fiddling with the band. Although it takes some getting accustomed to, the overall movement is smooth.

Several controls on the ear cups allow you to avoid having to touch your connected device. The noise-cancelling button is adjustable on the left cup, while the toggles for power/Bluetooth and activating digital assistants are on the right.

Bose has incorporated a capacitive-touch display on the right ear cup in case blindly groping around for buttons isn’t your thing. A swipe up or down will raise or reduce the volume, while a double-tap will play/pause or answer/ignore calls. Sliding forward or backward on a track will skip forward or backward. The USB Type-C charging connector is likewise included in the right ear cup, indicating that Bose is completely committed to the twenty-first century.

To use the Bose Noise Cancelling Headphones 700, you must first download the Bose Music app from the Google Play Store or the App Store, which is available for free.

After that, simply follow the on-screen directions to complete the pairing procedure.

The touch controls are simple: slide up and down on the right earcup to adjust the volume, press twice to pause/play your music, and swipe backward/forwards to navigate the tracklisting.

The headphones have Alexa built-in, so all you have to do is speak “Alexa” to activate Amazon’s virtual assistant.

You can also call Google Assistant and Siri by hitting a dedicated button on the right earcup, after which you may use your voice to issue requests.

Bose claims a battery life of 20 hours, which we found to be true, but this number may vary somewhat depending on how loud you listen; higher volume typically means the battery drains faster.

The battery life isn’t as lengthy as the Sony WH-1000XM3 noise Wireless Headphones’ 30 hours, but it’s still more than enough to get you through a few commutes or a long flight.

I’ve been wearing the 700s for a week and find them to be comfy. The 700s are lighter than the Sony WH-1000XM3 headphones, but bulkier than their predecessors, weighing 9 ounces.

Even after wearing the cans for 2 hours straight, I never felt any uncomfortable pressure because of the cushion on the underside of the headband. Several times on journeys back to New Jersey, I slept off in them.

The memory foam earpads, which are encased in black leatherette, are equally as pleasant. The oval shape encloses the ears and forms a rather tight seal to block out unwanted sounds. The moisture that collects around the leather during a hot summer day is my sole complaint about the headphones. However, this is a minor complaint.

Noise Cancellation

Bose has excelled itself with the Headphones 700, and the intricacy of the noise cancelling they provide is a large part of its appeal.

Noise-cancelling headphones have traditionally been meant to filter out ambient sounds so that you can hear your music more clearly.

If you’re listening to music, this may be really powerful. However, whether you’re standing on a busy street or attempting to chat on a rumbling train, the person you’re speaking to can still hear everything that’s going on around you when you’re on the phone.

The Bose Noise Cancelling Headphones 700 attempt to address this by incorporating noise cancellation into both phone conversations and music.

According to Bose, this is possible owing to an eight-microphone system, six of which provide classic noise cancellation so you may listen to your music without interruption.

During phone calls, two of these microphones are linked with two independent mics, which work together to isolate your speech and reject ambient noise. This implies that the person on the other end of the line hears your voice more clearly, with less background noise interfering with your discussion.

Even when strolling down a crowded London street, we found the call quality to be very clear when using the headphones for phone calls.

Three of the noise cancellation settings may be selected as presets and toggled between using the physical button on the earcup, which can be managed via the Bose app.

While contractors in our neighbor’s yard drilled, chatted loudly, and blasted their radio, we tried toggling between 0, 5, and 10.

The noise was much reduced when we used the headphones at their highest level of 10, and we couldn’t hear them at all with our music playing.

If you’re sensitive to the pressure noise-cancellation may exert on your ears, these headphones may be preferable to their predecessors; Bose has avoided the suction-like sensation that plagues many other noise-canceling models.

Full transparency also called ‘Conversation Mode’ by Bose, disables noise cancellation fully and enables sound to travel through the earcups with no interruption, allowing you to enjoy natural conversations without taking off your headphones.

The noise cancellation on the Bose 700s is excellent, even outstanding. But what about the audio quality itself? The Bose headphones aren’t as loud as rival headphones, but they’re more precise, with a broad soundstage and well-balanced highs, mids, and lows.

On Jay-“Bam,” Z’s the trumpet was prominent, but not to the point that I couldn’t hear the snare, synthesizer, and piano above the Sister Nancy sample and Jay’s bombastic vocal. Although I put the volume on the same level for both sets of headphones, the Sony WH-1000xm3 headphones were louder. However, louder isn’t always better, since the bass seemed diffused in comparison to the Bose. The track’s floatiness obscured some of the track’s more sensitive parts, such as the rain effect at the start.

I was struck by how pristine the violins sounded in comparison to the gloomy electric guitar when I first heard Isaac Hayes’ “Walk on By” in the 700s. A flood of strings engulfed Hayes’ silken baritone, which was lifted by a large soundstage. The electric guitar was more prominent on the Sonys, while the violins were slightly subdued by the muddy lows.

On Estelle’s “Better,” the floaty lows actually worked in the Sony headphones’ favor, giving the tune a more ethereal air. However, this tone detracted a little from the singer’s alluring voice. The 700s had a better presentation, with less bass, allowing me to hear the bells and snaps that were stacked throughout the tune.

Final Words

The Bose Noise Cancelling Headphones 700 are a terrific choice if you’re searching for a superb pair of noise-cancelling headphones.

The noise cancelling technology on offer here is world-class, making them excellent for loud flights and crowded commutes.

The sound quality is likewise excellent, and they’re definitely fun to listen to; nevertheless, we don’t believe they match the Sony WH-1000XM3s in dexterity.

Despite costing $50 / £50 / AU$100 more, the battery life is also 10 hours less than Sony headphones; nevertheless, the Bose model does win out in terms of style, with its sleek, contemporary frame.

If you had to choose between the Sony WH-1000XM3s and the Bose Noise Cancelling Headphones 700, we recommend the former due to its lower price and longer battery life.

However, you wouldn’t be making a mistake if you went with the Bose headphones instead — they sound amazing, look wonderful, and the noise-cancellation is incredible.
