Applications that don’t have much space available for cooling might be candidates for the pumped two-phase cooling scheme devised by Advanced Cooling Technologies in Lancaster, Penn. ACT’s scheme is like what happens in a refrigerator or freezer; single-phase cooling is like what happens in a vehicle internal combustion engine. The advantage of the two-phase mode compared to single-phase includes lower pumping power and flow rates, fewer issues with clogging thanks to the use of mini-channel rather than micro-channel heat exchangers. and a lighter and smaller cooling system. In that regard, the cold plate here held by ACT’s Mark Stevens provides cooling that would otherwise require a conventional heat sink roughly three times larger.
