Nvidia’s Ampere range is the lowest price and performance increase since the power reductions may have gone too far. The first GA106 card had a 192-bit and 12GB VRAM memory interface. However, with 26% fewer GPU cores than the 3060 TI and lower memory bandwidth, total performance is at RTX 2070 only. Two years and a half later, a $500 graphics card may now be matched by an alternative of $330.
Or the theory is that. Sadly, demand has overshadowed supply once again in large measure, as we find RTX 3060 12GB cards selling on eBay for more than $800. This despite the precautions taken by Nvidia, which were worthless when Nvidia punched his drivers, reducing Ethereum’s mining performance in half. Word is miners’ workaround already identified, and the pricing implies that this is the case.
VRAM capabilities are not at least an issue, and in certain situations, the 3060 12GB begins to close with the 3060 Ti. But it is never quite there and if you can get one at a fair price, the 3060 Ti remains the best option.
