It’s worthwhile to learn how to upgrade PS5 internal storage, and it’s fortunately not that difficult. After all, some of the top PS5 titles may use up to 100GB of the console’s total storage space of 825GB, of which only 667GB is functional.

Whereas the PS5 has always supported some of the best external hard drives, the initial PS5 software beta made it possible to add more internal storage. After being rigorously tested by beta testers, the functionality will be given out to all PS5 customers in the following weeks.

The most significant advantage of increasing your console’s internal capacity is that an extra SSD can play native PS5 Console games. The external hard drive, on the other hand, can only be used to store next-generation games. You must first transfer them to the console’s internal storage before you can play them. However, an external hard drive can store and play PS4 games, so anyone interested can read up on how to transfer games to a PS5 external hard drive.

Upgrading the internal storage on a PS5 is a bit of a pain. You’ll need to purchase a suitable SSD disc and install it yourself. While it may appear frightening, as long as you’re experienced with a screwdriver, you should have no problems.

The most difficult aspect of the procedure is finding an SSD that meets Sony’s stringent standards. That’s because the console’s base hard drive has a read speed that’s at the top of the market, necessitating the purchase of an extra SSD that can match it. To assist you in purchasing a suitable hard drive, we’ve provided a section below that lists which hard drives are compatible.

Don’t worry if you’re overwhelmed by the amount of information available; our article on how to upgrade PS5 internal storage will walk you through the procedure.

Which SSDs card is suitable for the PS5 Console

The Sony PS5 is incompatible with the vast majority of SSDs. This is because native PS5 games demand incredibly rapid read speeds, and most drives simply cannot keep up.

A PCle Gen4 x4 M.2 NVMe SSD is the sort of internal SSD drive you’ll require. These drives aren’t uncommon, and major manufacturers like Samsung, Western Digital, and Seagate all produce them.

On their website, Sony has a long list of prerequisites, which you may see in the table below. Importantly, make sure your SSD meets all of these requirements, as Sony warns that failing to do so might result in your PS5 being damaged.

InterfacePCIe Gen4 x4 M.2 NVMe SSD
Capacity250GB – 4TB
Sequential read speed5,500MB/s or faster
Form FactorM.2 type 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280 and 22110
Socket typeSocket 3 (Key M)
Total size including cooling structureSmaller than 110mm (L) x 25mm (W) x 11.25mm (H)
Lengths supported30mm, 42mm, 60mm, 80mm, 110mm

PS5 compatibility has previously been confirmed for the Seagate FireCuda 530 NVMe M.2 PCle Gen 4 SSD and the Samsung 980 PRO SSD. The Corsair MP600 Pro LPX, which we tested, the XPG GAMMIX S70 Blade, WD BLACK 1TB SN850, and the Sabrent Rocket 4 Plus are all compatible drives. All of these drives include a heatsink, which Sony requires to maintain consistent temperatures.

The heatsinks on all of the SSDs listed above fit within the PS5. Other SSDs may or may not have heatsinks, so read user reviews to be sure that any SSD you buy will fit. To fit inside the PS5’s internal expansion slot, the drive must be no more than 25mm wide and 11.25mm height with the heatsink connected.

How to Upgrade PS5 Internal Storage: Follow the Steps

To upgrade the internal storage on your PS5, you’ll need a level surface to work on, a #1 Phillips or cross-head screwdriver, and it’s not a terrible idea to use a tiny flashlight or your phone’s torch to see what you’re doing at all times.

1. Place your console upside down on a flat surface. The carved PlayStation logo on the console’s top should point downwards. Before you start, make sure all cords are unplugged completely.
