Pulsiv Limited become the world’s first company to deliver 240W from a single USB-C port. This ground-breaking achievement has been developed by combining a Pulsiv OSMIUM front-end design with an industry standard flyback which passes strict EMC/Line Current requirements and is guaranteed to change the global charging market.

Existing 240W USB-C chargers distribute the power across multiple ports with a maximum of 140W being delivered from a single 1C port. This leaves many higher-power applications such as monitors, gaming laptops, and small domestic appliances unable to benefit from the common USB-C interface and fast-charging protocol. Traditional Boost PFC+LLC-based designs are notoriously noisy, so EMC compliance can be a challenge. They are also expensive and do not respond well to variable output voltages or rapidly changing load requirements. Pulsiv OSMIUM technology enables a flyback topology to be used at higher power levels which solves all of these problems.

The company’s strategy for deploying this exciting technology adds further flexibility for customers. Three options are set to be offered:

Reference Design. A reference design containing a datasheet, schematic, and bill of materials will be published on www.pulsiv.com in the coming weeks. This will enable anyone to start designing and laying out their own 240W USB-C solution and become one of the first in the world to adopt 240W USB-C.

Standard Assembled Module. For those whose resources and time are limited, Pulsiv will offer a standard fully assembled module with 1 x USB-C connector. The specification and design of this standard module has already started and pre-orders for samples can be placed now for delivery in late March 2025, with mass production quantities being delivered from July 2025 onwards. A number of Pulsiv’s distributors, including Digikey, will also stock the standard modules for fast delivery to customers globally.

Custom Assembled Module. For anyone that has more specific requirements, custom assembled modules will also be offered. This enables customers to determine their own specification, which can include the number and location of USB connectors, input voltage range, and any specific mechanical form factor requirements. This flexible option will come with an NRE of just $10,000 and an MOQ of 500pcs providing a very reasonable entry point for everyone.

For more information on this ground-breaking design, please contact the Pulsiv team, or any of their franchised distributors, or visit www.pulsiv.com

Infineon Technologies AG announced the launch of the ModusToolbox Motor Suite, a comprehensive solution of software, tools, and resources for developing, configuring, and monitoring motor control applications. With its versatility across motor types, the solution enables developers to bring high-performance motor control applications to market quickly and efficiently. The suite supports industrial, robotics, and consumer applications such as home appliances, HVAC, drones, and light electric vehicles.

The suite streamlines development and testing, providing real-time parameter monitoring for valuable insights into motor performance, efficiency, and reliability. This enables engineers to quickly identify issues, optimize designs, and enhance overall functionality. It offers effortless and accurate board setup, comprehensive signal analysis, and customized status monitoring. ModusToolbox Motor Suite features automatic detection and recognition of supported boards and kits, real-time visualization, and monitoring of motor control related signals. It also provides optimized system performance with pre-configured algorithms and real-time monitoring of critical system parameters. Additionally, the solution offers sophisticated algorithms that ensure control robustness across many motor types and applications. It currently includes out-of-the-box support for Infineon’s XMC7000 microcontrollers and will further expand its capability to include industrial MCUs, with PSOC Control integration confirmed for upcoming releases.

In addition to its comprehensive feature set, the ModusToolbox Motor Suite is designed to be highly versatile and easy to use. It provides a seamless graphical user interface for motor control development and an easily adaptable, hardware-abstracted motor control core library.

Infineon will showcase a demo featuring the ModusToolbox Motor Suite at electronica 2024 in Munich from 12 to 15 November (Hall C3, Booth 502).

STMicroelectronics’ STGAP3S family of gate drivers for silicon-carbide (SiC) and IGBT power switches combines ST’s latest robust galvanic isolation technology with optimized desaturation protection and flexible Miller-clamp architecture.

Featuring reinforced capacitive galvanic isolation between the gate-driving channel and the low-voltage control and interface circuitry, the STGAP3S withstands 9.6kV transient isolation voltage (VIOTM) with 200V/ns common-mode transient immunity (CMTI). With its state-of-the-art isolation, the STGAP3S enhances reliability in motor drives for industrial applications such as air conditioning, factory automation, and home appliances. The new drivers are also used in power and energy applications including charging stations, energy storage systems, power-factor correction (PFC), DC/DC converters, and solar inverters.

The STGAP3S product family includes different options with 10A and 6A current capability, each of them available with differentiated Under Voltage Lock-Out (UVLO) and desaturation intervention thresholds. This helps designers select the best device to match the performance of their chosen SiC MOSFET or IGBT power switches.

The Desaturation protection implements an overload and short-circuit protection for the external power switch providing the possibility to adjust the turn-off strategy using an external resistor to maximize the protection turn-off speed while avoiding excessive overvoltage spikes. The undervoltage-lockout protection prevents turn-on with insufficient drive voltage.

The driver’s integrated Miller Clamp architecture provides a pre-driver for an external N-channel MOSFET. Designers can thus leverage flexibility to select a suitable intervention speed that prevents induced turn-on and avoids cross-conduction.

The available device variants allow a choice of 10A sink/source and 6A sink/source drive-current capability for optimum performance with the chosen power switch with desaturation-detection and UVLO thresholds optimized for IGBT or SiC technology. The fault conditions of desaturation, UVLO and overtemperature protection are notified with two dedicated open drain diagnostic pins.

The STGAP3SXS is in production now, in the SO-16W wide-body package, from $2.34 for orders of 1000 pieces. Please contact your ST sales office for pricing options and sample requests.
