Magnachip Semiconductor Corporation announced the completion of the development of its 1200V 75A Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor (IGBT) in a TO-247PLUS package, designed for solar inverters. The Company plans to start mass production in October this year.

Magnachip entered the solar inverter market in 2020 by introducing the 1200V 40A IGBT (MBQ40T120QFS) and began offering the 650V 75A IGBT (MBQ75T65PEH) in 2022. Now, the Company unveils its latest 1200V 75A IGBT (MBQA75T120RFS), featuring its cutting-edge design technology and processes.

This new product, packaged in a TO-247PLUS with a wide heat spreader, improves heat dissipation as compared to the TO-247 package. Additionally, it enhances power efficiency by reducing conduction loss by over 14% compared to its previous generation. This improvement ensures stable operation even in overload conditions, thereby enhancing system reliability.

Moreover, this new IGBT product provides application design flexibility, as its performance can replace that of two 40A IGBTs. Another notable feature is the incorporation of a fast recovery anti-parallel diode, which quickly removes residual current to reduce switching losses and guarantees a maximum operating junction temperature of 175°C. Designed in accordance with the standards of the Joint Electron Device Engineering Council (JEDEC), this product is suitable for a wide range of applications requiring strict power ratings and high efficiency, including solar inverters, converters, uninterruptible power supply systems, and general-purpose inverters.

According to market research firm Omdia, the discrete IGBT and silicon-based MOSFET sectors in the renewable energy market are expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 15% from 2024 to 2028.

Power Integrations has announced the launch of the SCALE-iFlex XLT family of dual-channel plug-and-play gate drivers. These drivers are designed for the operation of single LV100 (Mitsubishi), XHP 2 (Infineon), HPnC (Fuji Electric), and equivalent semiconductor modules up to 2300 V blocking voltage. The new gate drivers are suitable for wind, energy storage, and solar renewable energy installations. This single-board driver enables active thermal management of inverter modules for improved system utilization and reduces the bill-of-material count for increased reliability.
The SCALE-iFlex XLT dual-channel gate drivers feature Negative Temperature Coefficient (NTC) data reporting, providing an isolated temperature measurement of the power module. This allows accurate thermal management of converter systems. System designers can optimize thermal design and obtain a 25 to 30 percent converter power increase from the same hardware. The isolated NTC readout also reduces hardware complexity by eliminating multiple cables, connectors, and additional isolation barrier crossing circuits.
The new gate drivers employ Power Integrations’ SCALE-2 chip set, minimizing component count and enhancing reliability. The gate driver board also protects the power switches in the event of a short-circuit.
SCALE-iFlex XLT plug-and-play gate drivers are available for sampling now.

At the Applied Power Electronics Conference (APEC), CISSOID released its new series of SiC Inverter Control Modules (ICMs) dedicated to the E-mobility market. These software-powered SiC Inverter Control Modules are designed to help engineers create functionally safe, robust, and modular E-motor drives while dramatically shortening time-to-market.

The new CXT-ICM3SA series offers optimal hardware and software integration of CISSOID’s existing line of 3-phase 1200V/340A-550A SiC MOSFET Intelligent Power Modules (IPMs) with an OLEA T222 Field Programmable Control Unit (FPCU) control board and OLEA APP INVERTER application software, supplied in partnership with Silicon Mobility. Depending on the selected ICM product, this modular core engine is capable of powering and controlling high voltage SiC traction inverters with battery voltages up to 850V, at output power in excess of 350kW, and with peak efficiency above 99%.

This unique integration facilitates the rapid development of SiC inverters by solving head-scratching EMC issues often generated due to fast-switching SiC transistors, by supporting different modulation schemes, e.g. SVPWM or DPWM, combined with dead time compensation, and by offering advanced motor control algorithms, including Field Oriented Control (FOC) and Flux Weakening management.

CISSOID further improves time-to-market by providing a complete SiC inverter reference design allowing motor bench testing of the ICM together with key peripheral elements such as current sensors, a high-performance DC-Link capacitor, and an EMI filter. Both the ICM and the reference design can be obtained from CISSOID, together with the motor control software and on-site technical support.

Delivering leadership performance, the ICM supports the drive of high-speed motors, with no compromise on efficiency, thanks to the combination of CISSOID’s low

losses SiC power module with the ultra-fast real-time FPCU, enabling high switching frequencies up to 50kHz. Furthermore, this application-specific processor dedicated to e-motor control, with onboard programmable hardware, accelerates the response time to critical events, off-loading the processor cores and enhancing functional safety. Both the FPCU and the control software are ISO-26262 ASIL C/D certified and AUTOSAR 4.3 compliant.
