Juice for Formula E racers
If you’ve ever wondered what the inverter in a Formula E electric racecar looks like, wonder no more. ROHM Semiconductor displayed this inverter from the Venturi Formula E team because it contains ROHM SiC semiconductors. The inverter is from season three of the all-electric race series. Use of silicon carbide devices brings 1.7% better efficiency, reduces the weight by 2 kg, and lets the inverter sit in a package 30% smaller than what was powering the car in season two. At the show, ROHM also introduced a new dc/dc converter IC (BD9V100MUF-C) able to step down from 60 V to 2.5 V (at 2 MHz switching speed). The new chip is expected to be particularly useful for mild hybrids and their 48-V electrical systems.
