EV fuses that won’t explode
When the battery pack in an electric vehicle goes through a fender-bender or a crash, the cells can get damaged in a way that causes super-high electrical currents to flow. There are fuses in the pack designed to blow in the event of over currents. But the huge currents potentially generated when the pack gets damaged may be enough to vaporize ordinary fuses and cause arcing that can lead to a fire. AEM Components says it’s AirMatrix fuses (top image) solve this problem. The fuse wire sits in a milled-out cavity within a piece of FR4 circuit board material, and the wire attachments in the fuse don’t use solder. The company says it’s the solder in ordinary fuses (bottom image) that can vaporize and cause arcing.
