I am doing exactly this type of system and did the exact same analysis. You need to remember to add some sort of in-rush current limiting even for the non-isolated converter running at 48V. For the first 20ms or so, you are going to want to have a small resistor in series to limit the current from the main power supply. It is easy to switch out with a very low on-resistance PFET.

It is nice that many 48V supplies can be adjusted +/- 10 per cent so you can get to almost 52V for even more energy storage.
